Winterizing ideas…

Winterizing ideas…

It’s only mid-october here, but we already have the heat set to come on while we sleep — just to keep the house at 55F! It is COLD here for October, and there is actually snow forecast for saturday, which is very unusual.

So, I am already looking around the home getting ready to winterize. Generally, I put plastic on all the windows to keep more heat in, especially the big sliding glass door sets we have in our dining room. But, this year we are thinking of putting our house on the market (after we finish up a few small home improvements, like patching old holes in the ceiling!) SO I don’t think I can put plastic on the windows because it just doesn’t look that great, and might get people thinking that the house is too drafty to buy… (any thoughts?)

Instead, I have gone out and invested in some faux silk, lined curtains to hang in the dining room, which I hope will work similarly. Our other windows are quite airtight, so I am not as worried about heat loss there…

I am also scraping plans we had to make a small external solar heater, b/c it would have to be right by our front walk for optimal sun exposure, and let’s face it, it just wasn’t going to look too pretty :( But I still have hopes to turn my southern facing window box by my kitchen sink into a solar heater. How you ask? By installing a plexiglass sheet (removable with small screws) over the inner opening, with a small gap at both the top and bottom. I would fill bottom of the window box with an attractive layer of dark rocks to attract and store heat. Natural convection will draw the cold air in the bottom and push the warm air out the top, which will create some nice heat for the kitchen/dining area during the day, I hope. I tried it out last year with some impermanent plastic sheeting and it seemed to work rather well.

Raven and River

Raven and River

Raven

knowing
swoops out of winter into spring,
circling, circling.
He gurgles and burbles,
like a river flowing.
R-r-rawk, r-r-awk quiver
Wake the sleeping River.

Red Squirrel
listening
skitters up the highest spruce.
She searches this way, that way, back again.
Bright eyes sparkle,
like a river shining.
Chit-chit, shimmer
Wake the sleeping River.

Ruffed Grouse
strutting
rearranges his feathers.
He beats his wings
like a river humming .
Thum thum thither
Wake the sleeping River.

Wolf
rising
climbs out of her own sleep
up the steep cliff.
She raises her head and howls, then takes off,
like a river running.
Yowl-yowl shiver
Wake the sleeping River.

Snowshoe Hare
twitching
leaps to the air.
In two-color coat,
she bounds over familiar paths,
like a river dancing.
Run-run hither
Wake the sleeping River.

Bear
yawning
gets up from dreams of fish.
Big-pawed and groggy,
he enters the light,
like a river turning.
Slap-flap dither
Wake the sleeping River.

Beaver waiting is not surprised.
For in his old winter lodge he feels the ice begin to shift, like a river moving.
Crick-crack sliver
The River The River

Raven circles and circles and circles

R-r-rawk, R-r-rawk quiver
Chit-chit shimmer
Thum-thum thither
Yowl-yowl shiver
Run-run hither
Slap-flap dither
Crick-crack sliver
Circle for the Giver
The River The River

River squints through eyes of ice.
She stretches and stretches and stretches,
waking up
breaking up.

R-r-rawk, R-r-rawk quiver

The River
shimmers for red squirrel,
hums with ruffed grouse,
runs after wolf,
and dances with snowshow hare.

River turns over with fish for bear
and moves in a new home for beaver.

And Raven-
Raven dips and soars
dips and soars
cutting the bright blue cloth of a sky
tumbling
flying
swooping
crying.

Together
Raven and River
gurgle and burble and roll their r’s
R-r-rawk, r-r-rawk, quiver
Circle for the Giver
R-r-rip Raven R-r-rip River
Rippling rippling rippling

Raven flying
Raven flowing
Free.

Spring Thaw

Spring Thaw
This is what it looked like here in CT yesterday, with temperatures practically spring-like in the low 40s. Ice was melting on the slow part of the river, which was misnamed “Lake” Lillinoah by settlers because in this wide stretch the river actually slows down so much that it freezes and you can skate or fish on it. After this gorgeous afternoon, we had an evening of snow. The weather channel reported it as a half inch — try 5 inches! No one plowed the roads until late, and cars were stuck everywhere. It was totally unexpected, totally beautiful, and the last hurrah for winter. It’s already halfway melted, at 8:30 this morning.
More ice melting.

Luke running to the water’s edge to find rocks and throw them into a small open pool. Gotta run fast, those rocks are sneaky!

Huh. Where’d they go?

Goodbye winter!
We’ll miss you, just a little bit.
